Code Compliance

code compliance enforcement

As of May 15, 2014, the 2012 International Property Maintenance Code is now part of the City of Waseca Code of Ordinances.  It is a model code that regulates the minimum maintenance requirements for existing buildings.  Its intent is to establish minimum maintenance standards for basic equipment, light, ventilation, heating, sanitation, and fire safety.  It also provides for the regulation and safe use of existing structures in the interest of the overall social and economic welfare of the community.

The adoption of this code will enhance the City's current Code of Ordinances and help fill some voids that exist in terms of addressing complaints about issues not adequately covered in the current City Code (for example: accessory structures, broken windows, graffiti, roofing, siding, masonry, exterior paint, and decorative features).  Code Compliance is currently administered and enforced by the Planning and Zoning Coordinator on a complaint basis and in cooperation with the Building Codes Department.

Code compliance issues and nuisances are described in Chapter 91 of the Waseca City Code

Examples of common code violations include the following:

  • Tall grass/unkempt lawns
  • Failure to remove snow from a public sidewalk
  • Inoperable or unregistered vehicles
  • Discarded furniture, appliances, trash, etc.
