Illicit Discharges

illicit discharge

An illicit (or illegal) discharge is any discharge to a municipal storm sewer system that is not composed entirely of stormwater.  In other words, an illicit discharge is the dumping of any non-stormwater liquid or other material into a storm sewer.  Examples of an illicit discharge include paints, mop water, cleaning solutions, oil, gas, antifreeze, yard or pet waste, concrete washout, chlorinated swimming pools, or any other chemically treated water.  These substances should be safely and appropriately disposed of (do not assume they can go down the sink or be flushed)!

Because stormwater is not treated and directly enters our lakes, streams, and groundwater, illicit discharges can be harmful to people, wildlife, and the environment.

If you have any questions about illicit discharges, or wish to report an illicit discharge,
please call the Stormwater Hotline at 507-835-9730.
